The Gwin Family - Founding Partners

Tradition means passing down values, lessons, and treasured memories that strengthen family bonds. Our upbringing, filled with vibrant cultural experiences and the teachings of family, has instilled the importance of hard work, respect, and integrity. These values guide us today as we work towards building an endeavor that lasts. Together, we are driven by the desire to pass down these traditions and values, ensuring that our legacy endures for generations to come.

What does “tradition” mean to you personally?

Craig: I am so proud to say I was born and raised Louisianian. My family upbringing screamed Louisiana, from my Great Uncle playing his fiddle at the Cajun French Music festival and me learning to "Jitter Bug", frogging with my dad (and watching my nephew fall out the boat going for a frog), watching my son catch his first redfish, fishing the local ponds with my friends, the cookouts, and playing guitar along with my buddy and my squeezebox that I can't play. Lastly, getting out my washboard when I get to listening to that zydeco music! My love for my heritage is what has inspired me to develop the Parish Heritage Brand!

Brandy: Central California Chica here! To me, tradition is a beautiful mix of cherished memories and a heartfelt commitment to keeping family bonds strong. It's those weekend family BBQs, our large 30+ family being seated at the local Basque restaurant, and everyone knowing my grandfather because of WHO he was. It fills me with pride and strength, guides both my personal and professional life, and helps me stay true to the values that matter most.

What values did your family instill in you growing up that still guide how you work today?

Craig: My Dad taught me how to be "hands-on" with so much, from repairs around the house, doing mechanical work, and everything related to outdoors in the hunting and fishing arena. My Mom and her magical gardening abilities led to my love for growing peppers. Every traditional Cajun dish I've learned to cook came from her. Looking back, I had an amazing childhood with family and friends and am proud of my Southwest Louisiana roots. Now, the Lord knows I gave my parents hell as a young boy but am grateful for the lessons they taught me. They defined who I am today.

Brandy: Growing up, I was surrounded by the respect and admiration my grandparents, mother, father, and family members earned in our small community. My papa always told me, “Mija, all you have is your word and your work to prove your worth.” It wasn't until I became an adult that I understood the profound connection between the two. Integrity and responsibility were the cornerstones of our family values. Integrity meant being reliable and trustworthy in everything I did, whether it was delivering quality work or being a loyal friend. Responsibility was about being accountable for myself, my actions, my word, and fulfilling my obligations or navigating challenges. These values, instilled in me from a young age, continue to guide me with pride in all aspects of my life.

How has your background been shaped by life experiences or people in your life?

Craig: Well, I've had many life experiences that I've learned from and some of them, well, not so much. Watching my wife go through cancer remediation was a tough one for me. Women have much more of a pain threshold when compared to a man is one thing I can say. I'm proud of what she overcame, she is one tough cookie, and I am so thankful to have her in my life. She has been my inspiration to do so many things in my life.

Brandy: Growing up in a large family means I have a built-in network of emotional support. This has provided me with a sense of belonging, security, and confidence. Knowing that I have people who care about me and are here to cheer when times are high and help through life's challenges. Having these senses allows me to navigate life with resilience and positivity, and most of all, with purpose.

Are there any recipes, flavors, or food-related memories that connect your family to the kind of product you are producing?

Craig: Tasting my mom's fresh chow-chow/pepper relish with her gumbo! I absolutely loved coming home from my offshore rotation from the oil field to go help my mom pick peppers while insisting we do it barefooted. Shelling purple hull peas and watching my mom cook them with a touch of fresh pepper and bacon.

Brandy: I don't believe I have ever been given a written recipe; I remember spending time in the kitchen watching and helping mom, grandma, other family members as they, then we, then I made my favorite meals. I do the same thing with my sons today, they watch, learn, do.  I will admit, it has taken many years to perfect the flavors of my mother’s chili verde and enchiladas, Aunt Barbara’s chicken mole, relying on 40+ years of taste memory. The thought of those flavors brings me back to special memories of Christmas, family made tamales, Papa's birthday.
